Our guest speaker on this 1st day of August 2013 was Mr. Michael J. Church. He is the founding president of the Gateway Beekeepers Association of King George. His presentation was very interesting and educational. His descriptions of the history, needs, benefits and qualities of honey bees was spellbinding. The discussion of the recent destruction of many bee colonies from Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) was particularly enlightening. All 45 attendees were focused on every aspect of his presentation. Mike handed out informational pamphlets to all in the room and encouraged those interested in possibly getting started in bee keeping to continue to ask questions and gain information. We thank Mike very much for taking his time and providing his exceptional expertise to our Conservation Speaker Program this evening. His presentation was greatly appreciated.

Several members asked Mr. Church for a source of local honey and he stated that they could contact Gateway member Wes Grigg at Cell: 540-220-5515 or email: firefighterinva@yahoo.com

Susan is also a biologist with the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. It was not difficult to spot her arrival especially since she brought some friends with no legs to the meeting. Her two snakes were the hit of the meeting, especially with the kids who wanted to hold them. Susan talked about the different types of snakes in our state and region. She dispelled may common untrue myths about snakes and promoted the thought process that snakes are good for our environment and play a key role. Susan answered all the questions from the group and stayed for an extended period since there was so much interest in the subject. We thank her for coming to our chapter and being a part of our continuing conservation education program.

The Fredericksburg/Rappahannock Chapter of the Izaak Walton League had almost 60 members in attendance for our August meeting. Our speaker for this quarter was from TerraScapes Environmental Consulting. Her name is Terra Pascarosa Duff and she is the founder of TerraScapes. Terra discussed quite a few important environmental issues during her presentation. Many of those issues focused on the fishing industry and how we may be able to assist in political solutions to protect, preserve and improve our resources for not just today, but, for future generations. Emphasis was placed on fighting for appropriate regulations to end wasteful overfishing that is hurting our fishing industry by depleting our local as well as world wide resources. The information was eye opening and thought provoking. There were many questions and Terra fielded each with candid answers. We thank her for taking her time to speak to us and for providing valuable information to all our members.

He talked to everyone about some of the conservation efforts that are important to our state and area. He discussed the budget, watershed issues as well as hunting, fishing and gun issues. Once Bobby finished his talk, the floor was opened for questions and answers. The topics were many and far reaching. Bobby fielded the questions and explained in detail, each one. After 30 minutes of fielding questions, we thanked him for taking the time to come to our Izaak Walton Chapter and providing his insight and information on pertinent topics.
